particular concerns: “Girls”

i am having a lot of mixed feelings about this new HBO show. i hated “Tiny Furniture.” it was a poorly written, worse acted and generally self-indulgent time suck. i spent the majority of the movie shouting “do some volunteer work!” at the screen.

i also hate that this show exclusively stars the daughters of very successful people. not that children of people who are successful shouldn’t also be successful. but come on, there’s no denying the power of nepotism. Lena Dunham is not that talented. yes, i admire that she made a movie and that she’s a female filmmaker in an industry we’re forever being told is devoid of them. fine, she’s a a person with a vagina making movies (her, not the vagina - though i’m sure that’s not far off). but none of this should mask that she’s still not very good.

mostly, i hate that i will probably watch this and relate to it. and not because it’s relatable, but because it’s been designed that way. which is worst of all. all things that seek out to “capture the millenial twentysomething milieu” by setting up shop in brooklyn and making pithy pop culture references make me want to type out BARF in all caps all over my screen.
